Impromptu Meeting

During one of my kayak outings last week, I was able to photograph some Yellow-shafted Northern Flickers (Colaptes auratus) as they began congregating, shortly after sunrise, in overhead branches of a dead tree. First, one flicker flew in:

… and then there were two:

… which quickly grew to four:

And, although I couldn’t get them all in one frame, an additional couple of flickers joined the crowd. These birds are always fun to see, especially when they fly, flashing their bright colors under the wings and tail! And when you get a large group together, it can also get quite noisy :o)
