Minnesota – Foxy Lady (Re-post)

(This post originally published in August 2010)

… well, maybe a Foxy Dude, not sure of the gender. In either case, while we were staying at my wife’s sister’s house in east-central Minnesota last week, this little Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) would come by their deer-feeding station several times a day. For the first couple of days I photographed the fox from their deck, using my 500mm lens + 1.4x teleconvertor. One day I set up my portable photo blind ~ halfway from the deck to the feeding station, just to get some closer images.

This little guy would come by the feeding station, sniff around the area, then trot off, following the treeline of the woods behind the houses in this area. The area in the woods is a bog, extending ~1/8 mile back through the woods to some water. Seeing Sandhill Cranes, Trumpeter Swans and Great Blue Herons flying back there, I decided to hike back to the water for some photography one evening … went back to the water area, but saw/heard nothing. Since I sank to my knees in several spots in the bog, I decided this was too difficult to attempt with my camera gear. But the bog’s a whole other story … back to the fox. With the hiking conditions too “risky” for me and my gear, I decided to concentrate on photographing the red fox. Here are a few of my favorite images of the red fox:
