Mallard Beauty

Over the past couple of days, I photographed at the wonderful Squaw Creek NWR, located in northwest Missouri. I traveled to the refuge to photograph Trumpeter Swans … a recent headcount indicated a little over 200 swans were on the refuge. On my trip around the 10 mile refuge car route, I came upon hundreds of Mallard ducks (Anas platyrhynchos). The male Mallard, called a drake, is exceptionally colorful. As I sat inside the car, using the car as a blind, one drake swam very close to the road, allowing me to make some closeup images:

As I continue editing the images made during this trip, I’ll share some of the other wildlife currently at the refuge, including the beautiful Trumpeter Swans.
