Get A Leg Up

Brown Bear cub ready to scratch

Now, don’t you just want to take this little guy home with you? :o)

I photographed this young Brown Bear cub a few years ago during a photography trip to Alaska’s Hallo Bay Bear Camp (Katmai National Park). This young cub’s mom, and a sibling, were beachcombing at low tide, clamming for razor clams. While mom and the other cub were busy digging up the tasty morsels, this youngster was more interested in us. He wandered very close to us, which was exciting from a photographic standpoint, but was making us a bit nervous! After all, I’m sure you’ve heard the many stories of how a mom doesn’t want to be separated from her baby. But we were in a small group, along with a guide that was armed with a “bear flare” … just in case. We were all very still, as mom kept a wary eye on us and her cub. After a couple of minutes, this little guy had seen enough of us and turned to join his family. What an experience!
