While hiking the nearby prairie meadow a while back, I ran upon this Spotted Cucumber Beetle (Diabrotica undecimpunctata), wandering about a backlit wildflower:

The Spotted Cucumber Beetle is one of the most destructive beetles. Gardeners always seem to be battling this insect in their vegetable gardens. But in a prairie setting, they look so wonderful!

Photo Equipment Used:

  • Canon 7D body
  • Canon 180mm macro lens + Canon 1.4x TC (totalling 252mm)
  • Bogen 3221 Tripod, with Kirk Ent. heavy duty ballhead
  • ISO 400
  • Aperture f/18
  • Shutter speed 1/10 sec
