Clark Tower & Fall Colors in Winterset City Park

Today’s post concludes my recent travels to Iowa’s Madison County for photographing the famous covered bridges in the fall colors. The images today were all taken within the Winterset City Park.

First, here is an HDR image (a combination of 7 images, with varying exposures, combined together via Photomatix) of an old cabin that sits in Winterset City Park:

Noticing a road that broke off the main park road, I took it to see where it would lead. Winding through a heavily wooded area, I came upon this interesting structure:

Clark Tower

This is Clark Tower, a 3-story limestone structure that overlooks the Middle River Valley (this monument was erected to honor Caleb and Ruth Clark, pioneer settlers of Madison County, Iowa). And climbing to the third story of Clark Tower, a beautiful view of the fall colors across the landscape appears:

(Note: this was only a small portion of the view … I have more photos that I am going to try to stitch together into a panorama, for a subsequent blog post).

Leaving Clark Tower, the drive continued back into the heavily wooded area until I again ran into the main park road. But on the way there, the scenery was incredibly bathed in the fall colors:

If you’re ever in the area of Winterset, Iowa in the fall, be sure to check out Winterset City Park … as well as the 6 covered bridges!
