A Badlands Sunset

My short, 2-day photography stop in the Badlands NP (South Dakota) was too short for me … I have been in love with this place for several years now and it always seems that each trip there is not enough time!

Today’s post includes some HDR images of the Badlands landscapes, just before and during the sunset. Here are some of my favorites images. In this first image, the sun was low on the horizon and cast a nice, redish cast onto the wonderful rock formations:

In this next image, the sun is just falling below the horizon:

In this next image, the sun has set. Notice the car headlights that were recorded in this long exposure?

And this final image is a perfect example of why you never pack up as soon as the sun sets. Waiting for another 15-20 minutes, the colors of the sky/clouds opposite where the sun set, really gave a nice show!

  • Gitzo carbon fiber tripod (my favorite traveling tripod), with Kirk Ent. HD ballhead
  • ISO 200
  • Aperture: f/22
  • Shutter Speed: variable, as all above images were HDR images, using 3 images each (+1.0 EV, 0.0 EV, -1.0 EV) and combined in Photomatix Pro software
