Fun Friday: Plump Little Doggie

While in the Badlands, I came upon one of many prairie dog towns. As the day progressed, and temperatures rose into the 20’s, Black-tailed Prairie Dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) began to appear. This little guy looks like he is getting plenty to eat!

In reality, his coat was bristled out and furnishing him some warmth in the cold South Dakota winds. With temperatures in the 20’s, and a brisk wind, it was quite cold, and I was dressed in my cold weather gear, too!

Photo Equipment Used:

  • Canon 7D body
  • Canon 100mm-400mm, f/4.5 – f/5.6 IS lens, shot at 34omm
  • Handheld, out of the car window
  • ISO 640 (set to help get a higher shutter speed and keep the wind from moving the lens as I held it outside the car window)
  • Aperture f/11 (I set it a bit narrower than I like, but wanted to assure all of the dog was in sharp focus)
  • Shutter Speed 1/320 sec.
