Pileated Woodpecker

Pileated Woodpeckers (Dryocopus pileatus) are seemingly huge woodpeckers that I run across quite frequently when I kayak. Everything about them seems large … their long necks, their long tails, their large crests, their thick beaks, and their call. While drifting in the kayak, I often hear them before I see them. Quite colorful, too! Pileated Woodpecker Pileated Woodpecker Photography Equipment Used:

  • Canon 1D Mark 3 body
  • Canon EF100mm-400mm, f/4.5 – f/56, IS lens + Canon 1.4x TC, shot from 530mm to 540 mm
  • Handheld from the kayak, with IS “On”
  • ISO 800
  • Aperture f/8
  • Shutter 1/640 sec. to 1/800 sec.
