Pinkies

Today’s post includes some macro images I captured about a week ago on a local prairie. Deptford Pinks (Dianthus armeria) have always been a favorite wildflower. So small, so fragile and dainty looking, yet so resilient. Standing up to 20″ tall, with small flowers ranging from 1/4″ to 1/2″ in diameter, they are quite photogenic in the prairie landscape:

Notice the small spider web in the top 2 images? I’ll certainly be looking for my little friend when I return to the prairie. I’m really hoping we have some of these still blooming during my upcoming “Prairie Wildflower” workshop on Monday morning. But if not, there are plenty of other photo opps right now on the prairie, so I’m sure we’ll have a great time and learn some new techniques and tips :o)

Photographic Equipment Used:

  • Canon 7D body
  • Canon EF180mm, f/3.5 macro lens (bottom image captured with Canon 1.4x TC)
  • Gitzo #1258-LVL carbon fiber tripod, with Kirk Ent. HD ballhead
  • ISO 250 (top 2 images) and ISO 800 (bottom image)
  • Aperture f/3.5 (top 2 images) and f/5.0 (bottom image)
  • Shutter 1/160 sec. (top 2 images) and 1/320 sec. (bottom image)
