Reaching Peak

Fall foliage while I was in Rocky Mountain National Park this past week, was phenomenal! Today’s post includes some images I captured along Bear Lake Road, and one image at Bear Lake:

And a few images captured along the road from Moraine Park and Bear Lake (Bear Lake Road):

All of today’s images were captured via the Canon 5D Mark 3’s “in-camera HDR” feature. Each image was made by the camera combining 3 separate images (one at set exposure, one at +1.0 over set exposure, and one at -1.0 under set exposure). The HDR mode was set at “Art Vivid” setting, which I think is one of the most realistic modes for HDR. Often, HDR gives very “unreal” images, with the colors very exaggerated and often (at least to my liking). And even using the Art Vivid mode, I desaturated the greens a bit in most of the images, as the resulting greens were a bit “over the top” for me. But the advantage of HDR is that the exposure is more even, throughout the composition.

Photographic Equipment Used (Note: Exposure data is the “set” data, from which the camera altered exposure for the HDR):

  • Canon 5D Mark 3 body, set to shoot HDR images, in “Vivid Art”, at +/- 1.0 EV values.
  • Bogen 3221 tripod with Graff Studioball SB-QR ballhead
  • ISO 250
  • Circular Polarizer used to help cut any glare on the leaves, and to help saturate the fall colors in the trees
  • All images shot at f/16
  • Shutter speeds ranged from 0.3 sec. to 1/40 sec.
