American Avocet in Flight

A couple of days ago, I featured some images of American Avocets (Recurvirostra americana) captured while feeding in the refuge waters of Quivira NWR in Kansas (if you missed that post, click on this link: Avocets). I love these in-flight shots, as they show off the bird very well. Note the upward curved bill, which is used to feed on crustaceans and small insects.

I arrived in the Colorado Rockies this afternoon … with snow flying. Because of the extreme cold and bad roads, I am delaying my first outing for photographing the Bighorn Sheep rut until Thursday. But I’m expecting a nice blanket of snow on the ledges where the sheep should be :o)

  • Canon 7D body
  • Canon EF 500mm, f/4 IS lens + Canon 1.4x TC (700 mm)
  • Bogen 3221 tripod with Wemberly gimbal head
  • ISO 250
  • Aperture f/5.6
  • Shutter 1/1250 sec.
