Fun Friday: Getting “Nose-Thumbed” By a Ram

Bighorn Sheep ram "lip curling"

Actually, this Bighorn Sheep ram is performing a “lip curl”, a behavior exhibited in the rut. The males have exceptional olfactory organs and by pulling air into this region, they can sense if a ewe is in estrus. I’ll feature some more images and information on this behavior in another post.

Photographic Equipment Used:

  • Canon 5D Mark 3 body
  • Canon EF 100mm-400mm, f/4.5-f/5.6 IS lens + Canon 1.4x TC (shot at 520mm)
  • Handheld, with IS “On”
  • ISO 1600
  • Aperture f/9
  • Shutter 1/500 sec.
