A ‘Bottom-Feeder’ Surfaces

While photographing birds at my feeder last weekend, I was a bit surprised to find this Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis) foraging for sunflower seeds on my front porch railing. The juncos are typically “bottom feeders”, that is they feed on the ground. We have lots of juncos that migrate to our rural home in the winter, but they are typically foraging on the deck floor. But this lone junco (constantly, several juncos were foraging on the floor) was the exception, foraging along the railing of the front porch:

I’m not real sure, but I believe this is the plumage of the first winter junco.
