Sandhill Cranes foraging in cornfield

In yesterday’s post, I featured a few images of Sandhill Cranes arriving in the cornfields to forage. Today’s post includes a few videos I captured of this activity. Sorry for the somewhat jerky movements … I was shooting handheld, while resting my camera/lens on the car window ledge (staying inside the vehicle to prevent spooking the cranes). Shooting in this mode, along with using the rear LCD screen to follow the action, is a skill I have not yet perfected. :o(  And the wind was pretty nasty at times, and since I wasn’t using an external microphone, the wind noise is a bit of a distraction. I still hope you enjoy the cranes as they forage along the Platte River! Here are 3 videos I captured:

Photographic Equipment Used:

  • Canon 5D Mark 3 body
  • Canon EF 100-400mm, f/4.5-5.6 IS lens, with Canon 1.4x TC, shot at 560mm
  • Handheld, shot from the car window to prevent frightening the birds
  • ISO 800
  • Aperture f/9
  • Shutter 1/400 sec.
