Fun Friday: A Common Spring Sighting

A common sight around Missouri right now, as spring rolls in … a male Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus) singing and displaying his bright red wing patches:

Male Red-wing Blackbird

This image was captured during my recent visit to Squaw Creek NWR, in northwest Missouri, but several of my rural neighbors have ponds and the Red-winged Blackbirds have been very active around my home, too.

Photographic Equipment Used:

  • Canon 5D Mark 3 body
  • Canon EF 100-400mm, f/4.5-5.6 IS lens, with Canon 1.4x TC, shot at 560mm
  • Handheld, with IS “On”, from car window
  • ISO 500
  • Aperture f/8
  • Shutter 1/250 sec.
