Dressed in Less Red

In yesterday’s post (“Dressed in Red”), I featured the very red coloration of the male Half-banded Toper dragonfly (Sympetrum semicinctum). In today’s post, I’m featuring what I believe to be is the female of this species; if I’m incorrect, please let me know.

Here are a couple of my favorite images:

Not real sure if this is the same species, but it has some striking similarities as the red males … size is about the same, coloration (spots) on the abdomen are very similar, wing spots appear to be very similar, and both were found in the same location.

Photographic Equipment Used:

  • (Note: actual data for these images unavailable at the time of this post, but the data shown is that used for the males. The data for the female images are likely very similar)
  • Canon 5D Mark 3 body
  • Canon EF 180mm, f/3.5 macro lens + Canon 1.4x TC (for some of the images)
  • Handheld, with IS “On”
  • ISO 200 to ISO 500
  • Aperture f/5 to f/8
  • Shutter 1/400 sec. to 1/1250 sec.
