Bighorn Rams of Waterton Canyon

Today’s post features some of the many Bighorn Sheep ram images I captured during my recent trip to Waterton Canyon, Colorado:

At one point, one of the older rams (not one of the largest in this herd) attempts to mate with a ewe that was not yet ready to mate:

In another post I’ll talk about my attempts at capturing head-butting of the rams.

  • Canon 5D Mark 3 body + Canon 1.4x TC
  • Canon EF 100mm-400mm f/4.5-f/5.6 IS lens
  • Handheld, with IS “On”
  • ISO 400 to ISO 1600 (depending on available light in the canyon)

  • Shutter 1/50 sec. to 1/640 sec.

Magnificent animals. That last shot is intimidating!

  • Thanks, Scott! Yes, I have to admit that I was a bit nervous with that brute … he came pretty close to me and I was really hoping he didn’t decide to butt me! But I think he had love on his mind, more than on me :o)
