Fun Friday: Please Don’t Eat the Flowers!

Today’s Fun Friday post comes from 2013, while photographing in the beautiful Glacier National Park in northwest Montana. I came upon this image over the weekend, while working on assembling information for a return trip to the park next summer.

This image was captured early in the morning, just a few days after the park opened for the summer. This Columbian Ground Squirrel was sitting in the middle of a patch of wildflowers and was busy chomping on an Indian Paintbrush. If you look at the background, there was very dense fog that morning and visibility was drastically cut down. Fortunately, this little guy was close enough that I could photograph him!

I’m eagerly awaiting my return trip to the park. So much to photograph there: amazing landscapes, wonderful wildlife (bighorn sheep, mountain goats, brown and black bears, tons of small mammals), loads of early wildflowers, outrageous landscapes (including early snowmelt off the surrounding mountain peaks), and I’m even planning on some late-nighters to capture the heavens above the park!

Photographic Equipment Used:

  • Canon 7D body
  • Canon EF 100mm-400mm f/4.5-f/5.6 IS lens, shot at 390mm
  • Handheld, with IS “On”
  • ISO 500
  • Aperture f/5.6
  • Shutter 1/800 sec.
