Carrot Top

One of our most beautiful woodpeckers is the Red-headed Woodpecker (Melanerpes erythrocephalus). I usually don’t see many of them around, but when I do, I always try to capture the beauty of this bird:

While photographing woodland wildflowers this past spring, I believe I found a cavity nest that a pair of Red-headed Woodpeckers is using. When we get closer to nesting season, I’m planning on putting up a trail camera to verify the nest location. Once identified, I plan on working at capturing some images of the nesting pair.

Photographic Equipment Used:

  • Canon 10D body
  • Canon EF 500mm, f/4 IS lens
  • Bogen 3221 tripod with Wemberly Gimbal head
  • ISO 200
  • Aperture f/8
  • Shutter 1/125 sec. and 1/350 sec.
