Today’s post features some cow and calf moose that I captured in 2006 at Sandy Stream Pond in Baxter State Park (Maine). In this first image, a cow and her calf are walking at the pond’s edge:
A couple of minutes later, mom decided to cross the pond. With a little reluctance, the calf finally decided to follow her across the pond:
Once on our side of the pond, the calf began to graze upon the greenery near us:

- Canon 1D Mark 2 body
- Canon EF 100mm-400mm, f/4.5-f/5.6 IS lens and Canon EF 500mm, f/4 IS lens
- Bogen 3221 tripod with ballhead (with 500 mm lens) and Handheld (with 100-400mm lens)
- ISO 200 to ISO 800, depending on shooting conditions
- Aperture f/4 to f/8
- Shutter 1/200 sec. to 1/800 sec.
