Sunrise Silhouette

A while back, I learned that lake refurbishment at one of the area’s local Missouri Conservation Area’s lakes was complete. The area still needs to have fish restocked and will not be open to fishing for several years. Since the refurbishment was complete, I thought I’d take the kayak out and see what I could find. The morning was relatively slow, but I did find a few things. As I was kayaking past a stand of dead trees that reside in the lake, I found this Double-crested Cormorant perched high in the tree, just as the sun was beginning to rise in the east. As I slowly glided by, it launched from the tree and here is a collection of images I captured from the kayak as it flew off to the south:

I quickly decided to capture these images as silhouettes since the lighting was very low. If I had decided to use Exposure Compensation to add more light on the bird, the shutter speed would have been so slow that I would have ended up with a series of blurry shots. But silhouette shots are kinda fun to capture, so I just went with it!

Photographic Equipment Used:

  • Canon 7D Mark 2 body
  • Canon EF 100-400mm, f/4.5-f/5.6 IS lens
  • Handheld, with IS “ON”
  • ISO 1600
  • Aperture f/5.6
  • Shutter 1/400 sec. to 1/640 sec.
