Today’s post comes from one of my fall trips to Snowball Hill Prairie in rural Cass County, Missouri. At the top of the hill, a few Rough Blazing Star (Liatris aspera) wildflowers were growing when I visited. Here are a few of my favorite images:
And a single Rough Blazing Star composed itself in the middle of this Snowball Hill sunrise:
I have nicknamed this prairie plant “the knobby plant”; when buds appear on the stalk, they resemble a stem with knobs … a unique plant.

- Canon 5D Mark 3 body
- Canon 180 mm, f/3.5 macro lens
- Bogen 3221 tripod with ballhead
- ISO 1250 (top photos, due to windy conditions) and ISO 800 (bottom photo, with little wind to contend with)
- Aperture f/3.5 (top 2 photos) and f/22 (bottom photo)
- Shutter 1/60 sec. to 1/200 sec. (top 2 photos) and 1/13 sec. (bottom photo)
