Valley of the Eagles

Today’s post features another Alaska image, one captured along the Chilkat River Valley near Haines, Alaska. In this protected region, also known as “The Valley of the Eagles”, warm thermals keep the Chilkat River open well into November and a late salmon run attracts thousands of bald eagles along a 2.5 mile stretch.

This image was captured in early November, 2008, on a weeklong journey to photograph the amazing display of eagles in the valley. Here is an image captured shortly after sunrise on one cold morning, as the sun began to filter through the clouds and onto the birds and valley. You can see many eagles already starting to congregate around the river:

  • Bogen 3221 tripod with ballhead
  • ISO 400
  • Aperture f/16
