Almost Goosed … in a Kayak

While kayaking the other day, I came across a pair of Canada Geese (Branta canadensis). Now this is not unusual at the location I was kayaking; I often run across a pair or two at the end of my kayak route. But this instance was a bit different. As I approached the geese, they were located to my left and on the other side of a rather narrow island in the water. But as I glided past where the pair was, one of the geese (presumably the male) swam straight ahead and around the island, and then across the bow of the kayak. And not only did he swim across the front of the kayak, he was awfully close … about 10 feet away. And as I continued to paddle, he was not backing down at all … if he could have managed a human expression, I’m sure it would have been consistent with “a dirty look”. And it was quite humbling for me as I sat at his level in the water (the way a kayak is built, you are essentially sitting at or just below the surface of the surrounding water). In fact, I was beginning to feel a bit intimidated by this brazen guy. Especially since he was showing no reluctance to approaching me. The thought crossed my mind … hmmm, wonder if anyone’s ever been goosed in a kayak before? Thankfully, he showed me mercy!
