Fun Friday: Outdoor Carpeting

Today’s Fun Friday post comes from one of my favorite Alaska destinations … Hallo Bay Bear Camp, located in Katmai National Park. As we were returning to camp from one of our photography hikes, we came upon this scene:

Brown Bear looking into hole in the ground

At first glance, it looked like a lumpy, bearskin rug … neatly placed on the ground,  in the outdoors! As we watched to see if the bear was in some kind of trouble, or even if it was alive, it lifted it’s head up and looked in our direction:

Shortly after, the bear left and we walked over to see if we could find what he was looking at. Nothing there, except for a small, dug-out hole. Don’t know if there was something that attracted him to the hole, or maybe he was just napping when we walked up. In any event, another good example of how wacky the animals can sometimes look! And by the way, I’ve made my reservation to return to Hallo Bay in 2012. Just can’t get enough of that brown bear photography!

Starting next Monday, I will be posting some images I made earlier this week from the Squaw Creek NWR (northwestern Missouri). This is one of my favorite places to photograph, especially during the spring and fall bird migrations. This past week, there were 84 Trumpeter Swans on the refuge … certainly enough in my book to “require” a trip there to photograph them! I had some wonderful experiences in the 3 days I spent there, and got some pretty nice images of a variety of wildlife. So, I will shift my posts to that photo trip before returning to posts from my late summer travels.
