On my first morning of my recent photo trip to Squaw Creek NWR, one of the first interesting things I saw was this little guy, about to have breakfast at sunrise:
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to make a confirmed ID on him, but I believe it to be a Red-breasted Merganser (Mergus serrator). The sun (still not in the open sky due to the loess hills) was of no assistance to “shed some light on the subject”. At first, I thought this guy had a small fish in his mouth, but during editing it appears that he has a rather large tadpole … kind of surprising at this time of the year.
