Gooseberry Falls
Another waterfall that I encountered along Minnesota’s North Shore was Gooseberry Falls, located within Gooseberry State Park. This waterfall is a very photogenic one, and even has a cave at the far end! Photo Equipment Used: Canon 1D Mark 3 body Canon EF 28mm-135mm IS lens Bogen 3221 tripod, with Kirk Ent. HD ballhead 3-stop […]

Go With the Flow
Back in September, I traveled to Minnesota’s North Shore to photograph the fall colors. Along the shores of Lake Superior, Tettegouche State Park lies. The Baptism River runs through the park, making it’s way down to the lake. And on the Baptism River lies Illgen Falls. Here are a few images of the Baptism River, […]

Did You Know?
Did you know that the Bighorn Sheep rams will deliberately break off part of their curved horns? When photographing the rams of Waterton Canyon and the Badlands NP, I noticed that most all of the older rams … those with “full curls” … had horns that were broken off near the tips. As a photographer […]

Badland’s Mule Deer
Besides the bighorn sheep, the bison, and the prairie dogs, the Badland’s prairies also have a large concentration of Mule Deer (Odocoileus hemionus), which also happened to be in rut during my visit. Here are a few images I collected in the early morning drives through the Badland. A rather large buck, with a small […]

Fun Friday: Smile for the Camera!
Actually, this Bighorn Sheep ram (Ovis canadensis) was performing a “lip curl”, checking the air to see if any of the nearby ewes might be coming into season, during the fall rut. The sheep, like many other mammals, have excellent olfactory sensory organs that are utilized when lip curling. The landscape is certainly different than […]

Spring Thoughts
In the cold snap, it’s very easy to get lost thinking spring thoughts! This Bumble Bee was busy feasting on Common Horse Gentian (Triosteum perfoliatum), a common wildflower found on Missouri prairies.

Longing For Warmer Temps, and …
… Roseatte Spoonbills (Ajaia ajaja)! As with most of the country right now, we’re experiencing very cold temperatures in Missouri. So cold that, while daydreaming earlier today, I envisioned watching the beautiful Roseatte Spoonbills as they arrived in front of me at Ding Darling NWR (Florida) a few years ago. These beauties are one of […]

The Big Boys Take a Break
Today I’m featuring some closeup images of the American Bison of the Badlands NP: It was quite cold in the Badlands, as evidenced by the leftover snow from a storm that came through the area 4 days earlier. Making it seem even colder was the winds that funneled through the area. Case in point is […]

Home on the Range
In one large area of the Badlands NP, there is an active herd of American Bison (Bos bison). Here are a few images I captured of the herd on the prairie: As the herd slowly moved toward me, I was able to capture a few closeup images, which I’ll feature in an upcoming post. Photo […]
