Due to my recent move to the Lake of the Ozarks, along with the Covid issues, I am currently not teaching group classes. However, I am available for private individual or very small group, in-the-field teaching, where we can safely learn more about our cameras and our photographic techniques..

Warbler Time, Again!
Yesterday was a great “working” day. I conducted a full-day, private workshop to work with a photographer on gaining proper exposures when photographing birds. Since the client was also a kayaker, we kayaked for half of the day and then broke for lunch, following that with downloading and critiquing his images. We had a great […]

Daytime Stars … Nighttime Stars
Today’s post comes from the Holliwell Covered Bridge of Madison County, Iowa. During the morning sunrise, I captured this “starburst” as the sun rose from behind the covered bridge: That evening, I returned to the Holliwell bridge to shoot the night skies over the bridge. Capturing 5 individual images, I later processed them together in […]

Living Right? Just Plain Lucky?
Today’s post begins a series of posts of images I captured during last week’s “Covered Bridges of Madison County, Iowa, in the Fall Colors” trip. I actually conducted this trip as a small-group workshop with one of my photography students. During the mornings, we shot sunrises over the covered bridges. During the day, we met […]

Wheel of Fortune
Last Thursday morning, I was conducting a “workshop shorty” with a student when I came upon this wonderful-looking Blue-eyed Mary wildflower. What caught my eye on this particular flower was the wonderful, “wheel/spoke” composition the flower was exhibiting. Positioning my tripod above the flower, so that I would be shooting straight down, I moved in […]

Faves of 1Q 2016
Finally, 2016 is behind us and in the books! For me, 2016 was a mixed bag. I had some awesome travels and some great photo opps in the year. But 2016 was also a very rough time; midway through the year, I lost my traveling companion and best friend, my wife of nearly 18 years. […]

Jack-in-the-Pulpits Blooming
I conducted another Wildflower “shorty” workshop this past Saturday and we found that the Jack-in-the-Pulpit (Arisaema triphyllum) wildflowers are now blooming! I found this species growing on the Missouri woodland last year and so far, they are again beginning to bloom. Here are a couple of images captured during the workshop: Coming up … more […]

2015 Student Wildflower Images
Today’s post comes from last spring, when I conducted several of my “Woodland Wildflower ‘Shorty’ Workshops” on a Missouri woodland. Right after these workshops, I had my accident and head injury, followed by surgery and a long recuperation. Recently, I ran across some of the images the participants sent me, so I thought I’d share […]

30 Days and Counting!
Been watching my calendar closely lately … it won’t be long until Missouri’s spring woodland wildflowers are blooming! In fact, 30 days from today is when I began photographing the woodland wildflowers last year. Today’s image was captured during my 2015 pre-workshop scouting trips. This Bluebell wildflower with buds showing is making me anxious to […]

Common Merganser Females
Yesterday, I featured some male Common Mergansers … today’s post features some females. Although called Common Mergansers, I often call them “Bad Hair Day Ducks”, from their obvious crests. Here are a few images I captured during slow times on my “Wintering Bald Eagles” photo workshop in January: And to show the distinct differences between […]

Common Merganser Males
Today’s post features some of the many ducks we constantly had around us during my January “Wintering Bald Eagle” photo workshop on the Mississippi River. We had several species of ducks present, but the overwhelming majority were Common Mergansers. Today, I’m featuring the adult males; I have some of the females that I will feature […]
