Due to my recent move to the Lake of the Ozarks, along with the Covid issues, I am currently not teaching group classes. However, I am available for private individual or very small group, in-the-field teaching, where we can safely learn more about our cameras and our photographic techniques..

Miniature High-Rise
During my early 2013 Baja trip, our last day was spent in Loreto, awaiting our afternoon flight back to the U.S. But that didn’t keep us from shooting nature images. We were in a lovely hotel in the middle of Loreto. Once you walked into the hotel lobby from the street, you passed the hotel […]

Touchy, Feely … On a Grand Scale!
Over the past few days, I’ve highlighted the friendly gray whales of Laguna San Ignacio (Baja, Mexico) … spyhopping in the first post, and breaching in the last post. Today’s post highlights the real reason a lot of people travel to Laguna San Ignacio … to touch the friendly gray whales! For many years, the […]

Fun Friday: Meet the Newbie
Staying with the Baja theme, today’s Fun Friday post features a newborn Gray Whale calf. While in Laguna San Ignacio, we saw quite a few newborn calves. This calf swam by our ponga, just a short distance away from us, keeping an eye on us (you can see it just above the water’s surface) … […]

Laguna Breachers
Yesterday, I featured some Gray Whales spyhopping in Laguna San Ignacio, located on the Pacific side of the Baja Peninsula. Today, I’m featuring some of these friendly whales breaching out of the water. Breaching is leaping out of the water, where typically at least 40% of the animal’s body clears the water. Qualitatively, a breach […]

Laguna San Ignacio
After our wonderful hike/mule ride to the ancient cave drawings in Baja’s San Francisco Mountains, our next adventure was a long-awaited one to Laguna San Ignacio. Laguna San Ignacio is an adventurous drive (this drive is mostly on unpaved, dirt roads!) from the village of San Ignacio to the lagoon, located along the Pacific side […]

Rice ‘n’ Beans
Earlier in the year, I posted quite a few posts on the first part of my winter Baja trip … all of these posts were made during the Sea of Cortez portion of the trip. I’m now going to start posting on the inland part of the trip, starting with this “setup” post that launches […]

A Sad, Sad Sight
Warning! Some viewers may find these images disturbing! When photographing wildlife, my main objective is to capture them in their everyday world, in being themselves. By sharing this type of image, it is my hope that I can share a bit into the lives of these animals … how they live, what they do, how […]

Blue-Footed Boobies
One of the interesting birds found on Los Islotes (in the Sea of Cortez of Baja, Mexico) was the Blue-footed Boobie (Sula nebouxii). These birds are typically found in tropical Pacific areas, but is a rare summer visitor to California’s Salton Sea. A really neat bird to see, especially with the bold blue feet! […]

Aqua Marine
While on the Sea of Cortez, we stopped at Los Espiritos, an island, to do some hiking. As soon as we landed on the beach, I noticed a large Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura) soaring overhead. As he soared out over the water, the white feathers on his wings took an appearance of being aqua color, […]

All Dressed Up & Ready to Breed
Today’s post features a beautifully dressed up adult Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) that was posing on a rock at the Los Islotes bird rookery, in Baja, Mexico. The bright colors of the breeding plumage sure is a sight to behold! After a few minutes, he took flight and flew past our ponga:
