Baby, It’s Cold Outside!

Brrrrrrrr!!! Another cold day in the Heartland! Got up this morning, with much hesitation, with the outside temperatures at -3F. That reminded me of one of my trips to Alaska’s “Valley of Eagles”, located outside Haines, Alaska. So I decided it was very appropriate to go back and post a few of my favorite images […]

Fun Friday: Out On a Limb

While editing some older, Alaska images, I ran across this one image that I don’t believe I ever posted. While photographing bald eagles in the Valley of Eagles (near Haines, Alaska), this adult eagle flew in and landed in a dead tree a short distance from me: In this image, he is conversing with another […]

Valley of the Eagles

Today’s post features another Alaska image, one captured along the Chilkat River Valley near Haines, Alaska. In this protected region, also known as “The Valley of the Eagles”, warm thermals keep the Chilkat River open well into November and a late salmon run attracts thousands of bald eagles along a 2.5 mile stretch. This image […]

It’s About That Time!

With temperatures getting colder next week and winter knocking on our door, it’s about time for Bald Eagles and Short-eared Owls to again take residence in Missouri for the winter. In fact, I saw an adult eagle soaring over a field near my home just a week or so ago. And yesterday, a good friend […]

A Strange Looking Eagle

I am currently charging up batteries, gathering photo equipment, and planning for capturing the annual Perseids meteors. Thus, I likely won’t have time to be on social media over the next few days, possibly up to a week. I am, however, going back through some of my older posts and preparing them for scheduled, automatic […]

Pied-billed Grebes

Another common bird at the Leonabelle Turnbell Birding Center (Port Aransas, TX) was the Pied-billed Grebe (Podilymbus podiceps). Most were in their winter coats, with either a missing or indistinct ring around their bill. However, at least one was showing the ring quite well (note the ringed bill on the bottom image, below). Here are […]

Bald Eagles As Seen by Others

Today’s post features a few images captured by workshop attendees on my recent “Wintering Bald Eagles” workshop on the Mississippi River. I asked everyone to send me 3-4 of their favorite images they captured during the 3-day workshop and here is what I received. From Pat G.: From Wanda O.: From Karen W.: As you […]

More Bald Eagle Images From Day 1

Today’s post includes some more images captured on Day 1 of my recent “Wintering Bald Eagles” photo workshop. Starting out extremely cold, the day ended up still cold (but a few degrees warmer) and the steam burned off, leaving us with some nice, blue skies with a few, puffy white clouds dispersed across the sky. […]

Playing ‘Hot Potato’

I had a really great photo workshop with the wintering Bald Eagles on the Mississippi River last week. It was a small group photo workshop with 3 participants and myself. We were graced with a large showing of Bald Eagles, as well as large numbers of Common Mergansers, a few Mallards, and a lone American […]

Cold but Colorful

Starting to get things ready for next week’s “Wintering Bald Eagles” workshop on the Mississippi River. I’ve got nearly a full group and everyone is getting excited to photograph the wintering bald eagles. The weather also looks to be ready for a great time with the eagles … temperatures will be cold, but will certainly […]
