Whooping Cranes – First Encounter

Beginning today, my posts will feature the results of removing one of my “Bucket List” wildlife encounters … photographing our endangered whooping cranes (aka “whoopers”) while wintering along the Texas’ Gulf Coast. And what a wonderful photo trip it was! (By the way, I have added some whooping crane statistics and species information at the […]

Color on the Platte River

This post is being re-published from the spring of 2012. I am currently involved with a unique photography project that will take me 1-2 weeks. During this time, I will likely be on social media very little. I have set up a few posts to “self-publish” to my website blog; if/when time allows, I will […]

Faves of 2Q 2016

Today’s post features some of my favorite memories and images of nature that I photographed during the months of April, May and June. If you missed the first quarter’s images, you can find them here (“Faves of 1Q 2016”). Now, on to the second quarter! In spring and early summer, I am usually busy photographing […]

Faves of 1Q 2016

Finally, 2016 is behind us and in the books! For me, 2016 was a mixed bag. I had some awesome travels and some great photo opps in the year. But 2016 was also a very rough time; midway through the year, I lost my traveling companion and best friend, my wife of nearly 18 years. […]

Damselfly

On my last kayak outing, I found a Damselfly (species unknown) perched on a plant leaf and hanging over the water. Here are a couple of images I captured of this wonderful insect: The damselfly differs from the dragonfly by the way it carries it’s wings. While the dragonfly lays it’s wings out to either […]

Fogged Up Heron

During last week’s kayak outing in the dense fog at a nearby Missouri Conservation Department natural area, I came upon a pretty cooperative Great Blue Heron that let the kayak get relatively close (I was paddling south, with a light northerly wind at my back, so I let the wind carry the kayak towards where […]

One Last Fling?

I had hoped to publish another post yesterday, but my 3-day art festival in Lee’s Summit, over the weekend, took it’s toll on me … I came home Sunday evening very tired and wore out! I had a great show and met many new nature lovers, some repeat customers, some former co-workers, and I even […]

Royalty on the Prairie

A couple of mornings ago, I spent about 4 hours on Snowball Hill Prairie, photographing the last of this year’s wildflowers. Transitioning into fall, the last of the wildflowers are now in bloom, while lots of wildflowers are already setting seeds for next year’s color. Arriving before sunrise, there was not much happening except for […]

Fun Friday: Who’s On First?

From my front porch, you can easily tell that fall is here. The Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are busy, constantly feeding in preparation for their migration south for the winter. For the past couple of weeks, my feeder has been inundated with hummers. I’ve “counted” (I use that term loosely as they flit about and chase each […]
