Due to my recent move to the Lake of the Ozarks, along with the Covid issues, I am currently not teaching group classes. However, I am available for private individual or very small group, in-the-field teaching, where we can safely learn more about our cameras and our photographic techniques..

Fun Friday: Anybody There?
Wading birds, in particular the herons and egrets, can be comical to watch. As in the case with this Great Egret (Ardea alba), they will often cock their heads at an angle, conjuring up all sorts of possible captions! In reality, they are simply working at minimizing the glare from the water so that they […]

Has the Hurdle Been Cleared?
Today is the first official day of spring. Day by day, spring seems to be transitioning into Missouri … and not a day too early! A few days ago, I featured some photos of a male Red-winged Blackbird singing along the boardwalk at Green Cay Wetlands, Florida. Just yesterday, I was working out on the […]

The “Rainbow Bird”
Today’s post features the Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus). Walking among the water pools at Green Cay Wetlands, I found several of these birds busy foraging among the shallows: The last image shows the wonderful glossy irridescent bronze-green coloration of this bird, giving it it’s name. In the sun, it looks like a “rainbow bird”. Photography […]

Snowy Egret
Today’s post features some Snowy Egrets (Egretta thula) I photographed while they foraged along the boardwalk at Green Cay Wetlands: This next egret has a fish in his beak: Identification of the snowy egret is primarily by the “golden slippers”, differentiating them from the great egret, which has black legs and feet. These birds tend […]

Sure Sign of Spring
One of the sure signs of spring is the male Red-winged Blackbird (Agelaius phoeniceus), perched and singing. Lately, my covered front porch has been taken over by a large group of red-winged blackbirds, feeding from my sunflower bird feeders. The photographs below were taken while I was photographing at Green Cay Wetlands in Florida, but […]

Boat-tailed Grackles
Looking out my window this morning, I saw a whole lot of Red-winged Blackbirds and Common Grackles mobbing the feeders on the front porch. That reminded me that I had a new life bird from Florida’s Green Cay that I hadn’t featured yet, so I pulled up my images and am featuring them today. These […]

Green on Green
aka, Green Heron (Butorides virescens) in the Green Cay Wetlands. These guys are typically hard to approach when I find them back home (Missouri), but along the Green Cay boardwalk, this guy was not very far away, yet not afraid of people passing on the boardwalk. Here are a few of my favorite images of […]

Colorful Critters
When leaving the boardwalk at Green Cay Wetlands, I photographed a rather colorful water turtle, the Florida Red-bellied turtle. First there was one: A juvenile turtle swam by, then joined the adult … then there were two: Photography Equipment Used: Canon 7D body Canon EF100mm-400mm, f/4.5 – f/5.6, IS lens, at 400mm Handheld, with IS […]

Green Cay’s Pied-billed Grebes
Pied-billed Grebes (Podilymbus podiceps) were quite common in the Green Cay Wetlands. And they were quite easy to get close enough for some wonderful photography. As I walked the boardwalk, the grebes were busy either preening, or foraging for food. They feed by diving underwater and catching fish, aquatic insects, frogs and crayfish. Here are […]

Life Bird #2 … American Bittern
Yesterday I posted about a “life” bird I found in the Florida Everglades recently, the Least Bittern. Today’s post is another life bird from that trip, one that was found about 3 days later, while photographing at Green Cay Wetlands. This bird, the American Bittern (Botaurus lentiginosus) is a larger “cousin” of the least bittern. […]
