Food for Thought

Whenever I see something like this, I always ask myself “What happened?”, or “What caused this?”. In this case, the bald eagle feather likely was pulled from the bird as it sat in the tree and eventually captured frost from the cold temperatures in the Chilkat River Valley. But it always makes we […]

Good At What They Do

From 2011, a blog post of fishing black bears, at one of my favorite Alaska destinations, Anan Creek. During the salmon runs, it is not uncommon to find many black bears lined up along, or even in, Anan Creek as they catch salmon: In today’s post, I’ll share some images made of black bears catching […]

Does it Really Get THAT COLD in Alaska? (Re-post)

(Re-post from December 2010) When talking to others about my photography adventures, the subject often gravitates to me being asked if it really does get THAT COLD in Alaska. Here’s a few images I made in the Chilkat River Valley during my last visit to Haines, Alaska, to photograph the bald eagles there … you […]

Warp Speed, Mr. Sulu (Re-post)

(Note: this post originally published in December, 2010) No, this is not a post about Star Trek, but does seemingly encompass a time warp! All Dressed Up, with Snow Coat On

In yesterday’s post, I featured some beautiful landscapes of Alaska’s Chilkat River Valley in winter (“Just How Cold Does It Really Get in Alaska?”). “What Did One Eagle Say to the Other Eagle?” (Re-post)

(This post originally published in December 2010). … “I’m going fishing!” During the past couple of weeks, the Missouri weather has been cold. Coupled with decreased wildlife activity, not much to photograph. So I’ve been doing a lot of image editing from the past few years, trying to make myself get rid of those images […]

Trumpeter Swans in Picturesque Alaska

(This post originally published in December 2010) I recently had a comment from someone on Twitter about seeing Trumpeter Swans a few years ago, in snowy/icy conditions. That got me to thinking … I was able to capture some pretty nice Trumpeter Swan images 2 years ago, when I was in Haines, Alaska shooting bald […]

Fun Friday: What Kind of Pie is for Dessert? (Re-post)

Yummm … Magpie!   Actually, this Black-billed Magpie (Pica hudsonia) was in no real danger. The Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) had a piece of fish in his talons (not visible from this angle, due to the snow) and was just being vigilant that this magpie didn’t move in to grab a piece.
