How Foggy Was it?

Good to get back to blogging. Last week I had issues with my satellite internet (my daily “allowance” seemed to just fade away into the big, black hole, and had to stay off the internet until the service company could get it back on track), then my last art show of the year, from Thursday […]

Fogged Up Heron

During last week’s kayak outing in the dense fog at a nearby Missouri Conservation Department natural area, I came upon a pretty cooperative Great Blue Heron that let the kayak get relatively close (I was paddling south, with a light northerly wind at my back, so I let the wind carry the kayak towards where […]

Fun Friday: Lost in the Fog

When the “F-bomb” (fog) came up during Wednesday night’s weather forecast, I decided to take Rubber Ducky out for a little kayak trip on Thursday morning. As far as wildlife, not a lot of action, but will share a few in a subsequent post. But the foggy landscape was quite surreal. As I headed out […]

A Rare Sighting

During my last kayak outing, I was both surprised and pleased to catch some rarely seen birds … the Brown Thrasher (Toxostoma rufum). These birds typically keep to heavy thickets, making it difficult to spot them. But while kayaking, I was fortunate to see a total of three, out in the open. The one sitting […]

Look, But Don’t Touch!

A couple of days ago, I had another, early morning kayak outing at a local Missouri Conservation Area. As I unloaded the kayak and prepared to enter the water, I had to stop for a moment and capture the beautiful sky developing around me as sunrise neared. Now I didn’t come prepared, so had to […]

Fun Friday: Human Watching

Do you ever get that funny feeling you’re being watched? It’s not uncommon for me to be in my kayak and get that feeling. And it’s not that uncommon to find that the “watcher” is a deer, in this instance a White-tailed Deer doe that was intently watching me as I slowly kayaked past her […]

Cattin’ Around

Early this week, while kayaking a local Missouri Conservation Area, I heard the unmistakable call of a Gray Catbird (Dumetella carolinensis). Slowly coasting past the bank, I found the catbird as it sat in a tree branch overlooking the water’s edge. Here are a couple of my favorite images: I’m working on the night photography […]

Foraging in Early Morning Light

Another post from my recent kayak outing to a local Missouri Conservation Area. Shortly after the sun was up, I caught some movement out of the corner of my eye. Turning my attention to that area, I soon saw a large Common Raccoon emerge from the heavy greenery along the edge of the lake. As […]

Sunrise Silhouette

A while back, I learned that lake refurbishment at one of the area’s local Missouri Conservation Area’s lakes was complete. The area still needs to have fish restocked and will not be open to fishing for several years. Since the refurbishment was complete, I thought I’d take the kayak out and see what I could […]
