Due to my recent move to the Lake of the Ozarks, along with the Covid issues, I am currently not teaching group classes. However, I am available for private individual or very small group, in-the-field teaching, where we can safely learn more about our cameras and our photographic techniques..

Fun Friday: “Another Bad Hair Day!”
Today’s “Fun Friday” post features a migrating American White Pelican with his head feathers standing up, as if having a bad hair day. I spent a little over a week recently, at the Lake of the Ozarks. One day, as I worked outdoors, I looked up to see a handful of American White Pelicans flying […]

Low Flying Beauty
Today’s post was captured yesterday morning during the last 1/2 day of my “Wintering Bald Eagles” photo workshop, on the Mississippi River. Temperatures had significantly warmed up and the bald eagle activity was waning. But we were again graced with a single American White Pelican (as well as a Great Blue Heron, and a few […]

American White Pelicans
Well, I spent all day yesterday at the Quivira NWR, looking for Whooping Cranes … none to be found. About midway through the day, the arctic cold front passed through the area and the winds changed from a southerly wind to a northerly wind, and with gusts that would about blow you over! In fact, […]

Beauty in White
Another special find at Ding Darling NWR, on Florida’s Sanibel Island, was a small group of American White Pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) busy resting and preening: In Missouri, we get to see these beauties only during the spring and fall migrations, so I thoroughly enjoyed finding these white beauties during my recent winter Florida trip! […]

Fun Friday: ‘Bottoms Up’!
A few weeks ago, I photographed a group of American White Pelicans (Pelicanus erythrorhynchos) at our nearby, city lake. As they were migrating through the area, on the way northward for the summer, they seemed to be quite hungry, feeding as a group in the lake … and creating this “Fun Friday” opportunity. In this […]

All Dressed Up & Ready to Breed
Today’s post features a beautifully dressed up adult Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) that was posing on a rock at the Los Islotes bird rookery, in Baja, Mexico. The bright colors of the breeding plumage sure is a sight to behold! After a few minutes, he took flight and flew past our ponga:

Fun Friday: Backwards Pelican
Today’s post is about a rather strange looking Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) on the Baja Peninsula. As we were boarding our boat “Adventure” for a 6-day cruise in the Sea of Cortez, this young brown pelican was resting on the dock. He’s actually sitting with his feet facing away from me … and his head […]

White Pelicans in Flight
Today’s post concludes my encounter with migrating American White Pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) last week. While I was photographing them, I had several opportunities to capture flight photographs of the magnificent birds: Next up, more Baja trip photos!

You Know the Migration is On, Whenever …”
“… you get to photograph the beautiful American White Pelican!” As I mentioned in yesterday’s “Fun Friday” post, I was able to photograph some American White Pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) at the city lake, just a few miles from where I live, on Thursday afternoon. Here are a few of my favorite images. Hope you enjoy […]

Fun Friday: Bird Contortionist
I was working on my computer yesterday around noon, when one of my neighbors called to let me know that he had just heard (from his brother) that there were about a dozen American White Pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) at the city lake, just a few miles from where I live. I immediately grabbed my camera/500mm […]
