Due to my recent move to the Lake of the Ozarks, along with the Covid issues, I am currently not teaching group classes. However, I am available for private individual or very small group, in-the-field teaching, where we can safely learn more about our cameras and our photographic techniques..

A Small Beauty
Well, I’m back in the (indoors) office! Missed not posting last week, but had a plethora of things going on … maintaining my Ozarks (Missouri) butterfly garden, shopping and planting new plants, and having some real fun watching our Canada Goose dock nest (yes, a pair of geese nested in a large flower pot on […]

Blue Phlox
During my recent wildflower trek on the Natural Bridge Trail, in Ha Ha Tonka State Park (MO), I ran across several patches of Blue Phlox (aka, Wild Sweet William) just starting to bloom. Here are a couple of images of these blue beauties: I always love seeing the unfurled petals of the phlox, as it […]

A “Lifer” Wildflower, a “Spinoff”
Playing off yesterday’s post, “A ‘Lifer’ Prairie Wildflower”, today’s post features a very similar wildflower as yesterday’s phlox. In fact, it likely is the same species, just a slight color deviation, a pinkish cast, rather than white: More prairie wildflowers to follow :o) Photographic Equipment Used: Canon 5D Mark 3 body Canon EF 180mm, f/3.5 […]

A “Lifer” Prairie Wildflower
During my photo outing on Snowball Hill Prairie last week, I captured a new wildflower for me. After researching it, I believe it to be a prairie phlox, but not sure of the species. I thought it might be Phlox paniculata, but my wildflower book shows it blooms from July to October … and we’re […]

Blue Phlox, Post 2
In yesterday’s post, I featured some individual flower/plant images of the Blue Phlox woodland wildflowers. In today’s post, I’m featuring images of groups of Blue Phlox growing in small colonies: As mentioned in my last post, this has to be the best display of Blue Phlox at this location that I’ve seen! Can it get […]

FOY Phlox
Yesterday was another busy day. I began the day with a classroom session with a new student, with an emphasis on getting the correct exposure. We covered a variety of topics, but most of the time was spent on learning how to properly read the histogram and how to correct our exposures using Exposure Compensation. […]

Blue with Envy
Today’s focus is on another Missouri woodland wildflower that is currently blooming very profusely. The Phlox (Phlox divaricata), or sometimes called “Wild Sweet William” is a wonderful woodland wildflower to find, growing about a foot tall. The Latin name “divaricata” means “spreading” and this plant certainly spreads. Where you find one plant, you will typically […]
