Due to my recent move to the Lake of the Ozarks, along with the Covid issues, I am currently not teaching group classes. However, I am available for private individual or very small group, in-the-field teaching, where we can safely learn more about our cameras and our photographic techniques..

Six Years Ago, Today
With the sound of gunfire seemingly all around my rural Missouri home (firearms deer season opened a few days ago), I’m re-posting a blog post from 6 years ago today … enjoy! This past weekend I drove to central Kansas in hopes of photographing some rare and endangered Whooping Cranes that are migrating to their […]

A Little Bull For You!
I was quite surprised to find this half-grown Bullsnake (Pituophis melanoleucus) sunning on the gravel road of Quivira NWR when I visited there in mid-November. After all, the temperatures were only about 50F and these are cold-blooded creatures. These reptiles can grow to about 6-feet long … this one was about 3-feet long. Bullsnakes are […]

Beddy-Bye Time
On my 2-day stopover in Quivira NWR in November, I was hoping to catch some migrating Whooping Cranes. Instead, all I got was several thousand Sandhill Cranes (Grus canadensis) :o) Here are a few images I captured of groups of the cranes as they returned to the refuge in the evening, to roost: This gave […]

Sunset Over Big Salt Marsh
While photographing migrating birds at Quivira NWR (Kansas) last month, a wonderful sunset greeted us on our first evening. When the colors started to really “boil”, tons of birds began returning to the refuge for overnight roosting: It seems like the most awesome sunsets occur over National Wildlife Refuges. It makes especially pleasing photography whenever […]

Fun Friday: ‘You Up For a Swim?’
While photographing at Quivira NWR (Kansas), a rather odd behavior played out in front of me … a buck and doe white-tailed deer, wading and playing in the refuge waters at Big Salt Marsh. And not for a short time, but they were in the water for several hours! Most of the time they were […]

A Little Light-headed
Another common bird found at the Quivira NWR earlier this week was the White-fronted Goose (Anser albifrons). Arriving by the “boat-loads”, they settled into the refuge waters as they migrate southward. Here are a few images I captured as one small group of geese arrived: More images from Quivira NWR to follow :o) Photographic Equipment […]

American Avocet in Flight
A couple of days ago, I featured some images of American Avocets (Recurvirostra americana) captured while feeding in the refuge waters of Quivira NWR in Kansas (if you missed that post, click on this link: Avocets). Today’s post features a 3-photo sequence of an American Avocet in flight from Quivira: I love these in-flight shots, […]

American White Pelicans
Well, I spent all day yesterday at the Quivira NWR, looking for Whooping Cranes … none to be found. About midway through the day, the arctic cold front passed through the area and the winds changed from a southerly wind to a northerly wind, and with gusts that would about blow you over! In fact, […]

Avocets
I arrived at Quivira NWR (Kansas) yesterdy afternoon. No Whooping Cranes were seen, although small groups have been arriving/departing over the past few days. Hopefully, today I’ll find some Whoopers. But I did find some birds I don’t often see … the American Avocet (Recurvirostra americana): I’ll likely have a few more American Avocet images […]

Migrating Sandhill Cranes
During last weekend’s trek to central Kansas to photograph some migrating Whooping Cranes (if you missed my post on that, the weather caused all 18 of them to fly off as I was driving into the area), I did manage to grab some migrating Sandhill Crane (Grus canadensis) images. As I previously mentioned, there were […]
