Due to my recent move to the Lake of the Ozarks, along with the Covid issues, I am currently not teaching group classes. However, I am available for private individual or very small group, in-the-field teaching, where we can safely learn more about our cameras and our photographic techniques..

Nature’s Buttheads
Today’s post features photos I traveled to Waterton Canyon to capture … bighorn sheep rams in the annual rut. This was my third straight year traveling to the canyon to capture the headbutting of the bighorn rams, as they establish dominance among the herd. I’ve got to say that I wasn’t 100% successful … the […]

Bighorn Rams of Waterton Canyon
Today’s post features some of the many Bighorn Sheep ram images I captured during my recent trip to Waterton Canyon, Colorado: At one point, one of the older rams (not one of the largest in this herd) attempts to mate with a ewe that was not yet ready to mate: In another […]

The Lambs of Waterton Canyon
Today’s post includes some images I captured of the young Bighorn Sheep lambs as they meandered and foraged among the canyon walls and trail in Waterton Canyon, Colorado. It’s always fun to watch and photograph the lambs as they scurry about, sometimes chasing one another and sometimes just checking out their environment. Here are my […]

Busy Beavers, Part 2
As a followup to “Busy Beavers, Part 1”, today’s post features a few images I was able to capture of the Waterton Canyon beavers as they swam underwater. That amazingly clear, “mountain spring water” of the Platte River, along with the relatively shallow waters, made it especially easy to see/watch the beavers as they swam […]

Busy Beavers, Part 1
As was the case last year when I visited Waterton Canyon, I again had some quality time with beavers in the canyon. This year, I had a pair of beavers active in front of my lens … and they seemed to hang around for hours! Here are a few of the images I captured of […]

Mule Deer Rut
Early in my recent Waterton Canyon hikes, it was evident that the Mule Deer were also in their rut. A few, single does were seen, but most of the deer were in groups of 2-8 does and a nearby buck. Here are a few images of the Mule Deer that I captured on my hikes […]

A Skinny Dipper in the Platte River
Just returned home a few days ago from another wonderful fall photo trip to Waterton Canyon in Colorado. Again, the main emphasis was to capture the rutting Bighorn Sheep as the rams butt heads for dominance. How did that turn out? Stay tuned and I’ll have a followup post about the sheep (probably even more […]

Fun Friday: Getting “Nose-Thumbed” By a Ram
Actually, this Bighorn Sheep ram is performing a “lip curl”, a behavior exhibited in the rut. The males have exceptional olfactory organs and by pulling air into this region, they can sense if a ewe is in estrus. I’ll feature some more images and information on this behavior in another post. Photographic Equipment Used: Canon […]

Mule Deer Rut
Yesterday’s post featured a young Mule Deer buck. Today’s post features a large Mule Deer buck, along with his doe, captured as they grazed along the canyon ridge of Waterton Canyon, Colorado. Sensing something was watching me, I looked up to see this nice buck, who was watching me: After capturing a few images of […]

Young Mule Deer Buck
While hiking Waterton Canyon, I saw a lot of Mule Deer (Odocoileus hemionus), including this young buck, grazing not far off the trail: The rut was also in progress with the Mule Deer, also known as Black-tailed Deer. In another post, I’ll share a pair of Mule Deer, a larger buck with a doe, that […]
