I’m going to jump ahead to another location I photographed during my Florida roadtrip, a place I had never been before. I was strongly encouraged by my friends Tom and Lindsay (wonderful friends I met in 2006, during a photo trip along Alaska’s Inside Passage), who are lifelong residents of Florida, to be sure to check out this location. The name? Green Cay Wetlands.
Green Cay Wetlands is located in the Boynton Beach area and essentially sits right in the middle of town! Some wonderful thought went into building the Green Cay Wetlands. It consists of about 2.5 miles of elevated boardwalk that runs throughout the area. Not only is it a beautiful place, but has many different species of birds, both wetland birds and others. that can be found here. One of the birds that I found at Green Cay was the Sora (Porzana carolina):
I have seen a single Sora during one of my kayak outings near my home, during the bird migration (we live along the great Mississippi flyway, here in Missouri). The Sora is a wonderfully-colored bird, with somewhat of a “chicken-like” stature (about 8.5 inches long), although smaller, and a short, pointed tail that is often flipped up.

- Canon EF100mm-400mm, f/4.5 – f/5.6, IS lens + Canon 1.4x TC, shot at 560mm
- Handheld, with IS “On”
- ISO 1600 (extreme cloudy conditions necessitated high ISO to get a decent shutter speed)
- Aperture f/8
- Shutter 1/320 sec. and 1/400 sec.
