Colorful Resident

During my recent kayak outings, I have had several male Baltimore Orioles (Icterus galbula), along with a couple of females, fly into the trees around me while I sat in a cove waiting for wildlife. Such a wonderful experience to not only see these beautifully bright-colored birds, but to also listen to their cheerful songs!

Photographic Equipment Used:

  • Canon 7D body
  • Canon EF100mm-400mm, f/4.5 – f/5.6, IS lens
  • Handheld from a kayak
  • ISO 200 (blue sky images), 640 (heavy greenery image), 1600 (white sky background)
  • Shutter 1/250 sec. and 1/800 sec. (blue sky images), 1/5,000 sec. (heavy greenery image), 1,200 sec. (white sky background)
  • Aperture f/8 (blue sky images), f/5.6 (all others)
