Common Violet Wildflower

Yesterday, I held my first of several, scheduled in-the-field workshops for wildflower photography. One of the many wildflowers we found blooming was the Common Violet (Viola sororia). Here are a few images I captured, alongside a student:

And this next image was created by “focus-stacking” 10 images into one image:

The Common Violet grows to only about 6-inches high, but quite a lovely little wildflower! In addition, we found some Yellow Violets … I’ll share some of those images later.

Photographic Equipment Used:

  • Canon 5D Mark 3 body
  • Canon EF 180mm, f/3.5 macro lens
  • Bogen 3221 tripod, with Giottos ballhead
  • ISO 500
  • Aperture f/3.5
  • Shutter 1/800 sec. to 1/1000 sec.
  • Bottom image made by combining 10 images, via Helicon Focus software
