Badland Bighorn Sheep

Ok, vacation time is over … well, not exactly a vacation … more on that later. During a recent road trip to South Dakota and Wyoming, I captured some images of Bighorn sheep ewes and lambs (a few young rams were seen among the groups) in the Badlands NP of South Dakota. I stopped for one day, on my way to Wyoming, and on the way home, I stopped by the Badlands for 2 days of shooting. Here are a few of my favorite sheep images I captured on the beginning portion of the trip:

And one lamb was working at getting a free meal from mom:

But mom was working at getting Junior to wean and forage on his own:

Photographic Equipment Used:

  • Canon 5D Mark 3 body
  • Canon EF 100-400mm, f/4.5-5.6 telephoto lens + Canon 1.4x TC
  • Handheld from my car, with IS “On”
  • ISO 400 and ISO 1000
  • Aperture f/7.1 to f/20
  • Shutter 1/100 sec. to 1/1600 sec.

The real reason for making this trip was to learn and practice night photography. I was learning from a couple of night photography experts, Gabe Biderman and Matt Hill, both of New York City. I had a wonderful time, learned much and got some interesting images from the Perseid meteor shower as the meteors fell around us at Devil’s Tower, in northeast Wyoming. In a few days, I’ll begin sharing some images from that portion of the trip!
