Belted Kingfisher with fish

Today’s post features a Belted Kingfisher (Ceryle alcyon) from a couple of years ago. This imaged was made from the kayak at a local state conservation area. I was sitting in the kayak, awaiting some Green Herons to show up when this young female showed up with a freshly-caught fish. The Belted Kingfisher is one of the few bird species where the female is actually more colorful than the male. Only the female has the rusty “belt” around the chest. These birds are typically very skittish in our area, but this one was not very wary of me.

Can’t wait for these beauties to once again show up in our area!
