As I’m wrapping up my wonderful time on Nebraska’s Platte River, I’ll close out the week featuring one of the Sandhill Cranes (Grus canadensis) I found playing in a nearby cornfield. Sandhill cranes migrating northward from their wintering grounds along our southern border, often show a lot of interesting behavior as they spend a few weeks along the Platte River, putting on weight before the flight to their nesting grounds in the Northlands.
I captured this crane as he was playfully picking up pieces of cornstalks and “dancing” about the field with them, often flinging them high into the air. Quite the celebration of life! I hope you enjoy this sequence of images:
