A Howling Good Time

While going through my large volume of images in my library, I came upon some images that brought back a lot of memories. In 2008, I made my first of several trips to Yellowstone National Park in the dead of winter. While most of the park is closed this time of year, road crews work continuously to keep the road between Gardiner and Cooke City open for people working in those two towns. Thus, park accessibility is considerably limited, via car, but that area is a real powerhouse in the winter! Some of the many wildlife that can be seen here include wolves, bison, coyotes, red fox, river otter, bighorn sheep, elk, and lots and lots of snowy landscapes!

On one of my many trips through the Lamar Valley, included this pair of Coyotes, who seemed to stop frequently and either one or both would lift back their head and howl to the heavens. First, one:

Then the other:

Then in unison:

As I remember, it was extremely cold that day. I believe the thermometer on my car read from -23F to -12F … definitely winter!
