A New Prairie Wildflower

On one of my recent prairie hikes, I found a new wildflower for me … Gerardia (Agalinis tenuifolia):

This flower is in the figwort family and has many branches, forming a dense bushy plant that grows to 2-feet high. This wildflower must have a rather short life … when I returned to the prairie 5 days layer, there was no sign that they were ever growing there!

Photographic Equipment Used:

  • Canon 5D Mark 3 body
  • Canon EF 180mm f/3.5 macro lens + Canon 1.4x TC
  • Vanguard Alta Pro 283CT carbon fiber tripod, with 3 Pod H-3 ballhead (this is my new, lightweight macro setup)
  • ISO 800 (gentle winds made it necessary to use a higher ISO than desired)
  • Aperture f/5 to f/9
  • Shutter 1/160 sec. to 1/500 sec.
