A Return Visit With My Little Friends

During my recent visits to Glacier NP, I once again enjoyed several opportunities to photograph the little Columbian Ground Squirrels (Urocitellus columbianus) that are so common throughout the park. They remind me a lot of the Black-tailed Prairie Dogs … cute and lovable, and always entertaining! Here are a few of my favorite images of these small mammals:

In many of these images, you can see small, green plants emerging from the soil. These are small Glacier Lily plants, emerging from the soil as the snow melts away. I’ll feature some images of blooming Glacier Lilies in another post.

Photographic Equipment Used:

  • Canon 7D body
  • Canon EF100-400mm, f/4.5-f/5.6, IS lens
  • Handheld, with IS “On”
  • ISO 250 (all but last image) and ISO 400 (last image)
  • Aperture f/5.6 (all)
  • Shutter 1/100 sec. to 1/1250 sec.
