A Sandhill Sunrise

On my last morning at Carlos Avery Wildlife Area (east-central Minnesota), I finally caught a break. I had been trying to capture birds (specifically, Sandhill Cranes and Trumpeter Swans) flying through either the fog, or through a colorful sunrise. On this morning, there was very little fog. But the skies were beginning to cloud over, as a cold front approached. And with the clouds, some colorful skies!

Here are a couple of my favorite Sandhill Crane images, as they flew across the colorful sky as the sunrise approached:

Camera Equipment Used:

  • Canon EOS 7D body
  • Canon 500mm, f/4  lens
  • Canon 1.4x Teleconverter
  • Bogen 3221 tripod, with Wimberley head (original version)
  • ISO 1600 (I would normally not shoot with this high ISO, but the cloudy, murky conditions combined with the birds in flight had me changing the ISO to capture the birds without blurring)
  • Aperture f/5.6
  • Shutter speed 1/1250 sec.
