Catch of the Day

Today’s post features an image captured during a week of photographing Bald Eagles in the Chilkat River Valley of Alaska, back in 2007. Towards the end of each calendar year, there is a late salmon run in the Chilkat River Valley, just outside Haines, Alaska. Nothing but wonderful photography opportunities at this time!

Here is a Bald Eagle, in sub-adult plumage (“dirty” white head and “dirty” white tail) as it swoops in on a spawning salmon in the Chilkat River:

  • Canon 1D Mark 2 body
  • Canon 500mm, f/4 IS lens
  • Bogen 3221 tripod, with Wemberly gimbal head
  • ISO 400
  • Aperture f/8
  • Shutter Speed 1/250 sec.
